Memorial Day is the last Monday of May - a bit of history.

This day originated during the American Civil War when citizens would place flowers on the grave of soldiers who had died during the war and was known as Decoration Day.

After World War 1 the day came to be observed in honor of all those who died in all U S wars, and so the name was changed from Decoration Day to Memorial Day.

As well as family and friends of the fallen visiting the graves, volunteers visit cemeteries to place American flags on the graves.

    To honor United States service members who have died defending their country, the North American public use this day as a family day, a patriotic time for members of the family to celebrate and enjoy each other's company.
