An Italian Spring Story

The Wind from the Sea

Spring comes to Friuli from the south, carried on a wind the locals call il vento di mare — the sea wind — drifting up from the Adriatic across the flat plain of the Pianura Friulana. By April, the air has changed. The light is longer and softer, falling differently on the low stone walls and red-roofed farmhouses that dot the countryside between Udine and the hills.

This region has been waking up in April for a very long time.

Aquileia: Where the Mosaics Return

Aquileia, a short drive from the coast, was once among the most powerful cities in the Roman Empire — fourth only to Rome, Milan, and Capua at its height. Every spring, its ancient mosaic floors are uncovered again for visitors: vast, intricate, impossibly preserved. Wandering them in April light, when the crowds are still sparse and the air still cool, is one of those quietly extraordinary Friulian experiences.

Cividale and the River That Runs Green

Further north, in Cividale del Friuli — founded by Julius Caesar and later the capital of the Lombard kingdom — the Natisone river rushes turquoise-green with snowmelt from the Julian Alps. The old stone bridge, the Ponte del Diavolo, frames a view that has changed very little in centuries. Market stalls begin to reappear in the piazza. Families walk slowly, without destination.

The Vines Begin to Wake

In the hills of the Collio and the Colli Orientali, the vines are just beginning to push. Friuli's white wines — Friulano (once called Tocai), Ribolla Gialla, Malvasia Istriana — are among Italy's finest, and spring is when the year's story begins in the rows. Winemakers walk their land early in the morning, watching. There is a patience to this place that feels woven into the earth itself.

The Shoe of the Season

The friulane, too, belong to this season. Originally the shoe of the siora — the lady of the house — and later of craftspeople, farmers, and anyone who moved quietly through life, they were always a warm-weather thing. At Mar Soreli, that tradition shapes everything — soft soles on warm stone, shoes light enough to forget you're wearing them. The kind you pull on when you don't need to go far, but want to go well.
